Major Requirements

This document lists the formal requirements for the Physics majors (A.B. amd B.S.) and Minor. Although we try to make this accurate, it is not an official document; check with the published bulletin and the Director of Undergradute Studies in case of questions.

A.B. Requirements

Physics Courses: 41L, 42L (or 61L, 62L or 53L, 54L), 143L, 176, 181, 211, either 171L (see note), 193, 217S, or a laboratory based independent study course, plus one additional courses numbered above 100 except for Physics 230. Descriptions of these courses can be found on the Duke Online Course Synopsis Web Page.

Mathematics Courses: 31, 32, 103, plus one additional course above 100. Common courses to satisfy the last requirement are Math 104, Math 107, Math 108, Math 131, or Math 135; this choice is sometimes dictated by requirements in a second major. The physics department also allows physics majors to take Physics 230 for the fourth required mathematics course. Descriptions of these courses can be found on the Duke Online Course Synopsis Web Page.

For students entering before the fall of 2005

Physics Courses: The same as above

Mathematics Courses: 31, 32, 103, plus one additional course above 100. Common courses to satisfy the last requirement are Math 111, Math 114, Math 104, Math 131, or Math 135; this choice is sometimes dictated by requirements in a second major, such as Computer Science (B.S. degree) or Mathematics, where Math 104 is required. The physics department also allows physics majors to take Physics 230 for the fourth required mathematics course. Descriptions of these courses can be found on the Duke Online Course Synopsis Web Page.

B.S. Requirements

Physics Courses: 41L, 42L (or 61L, 62L or 53L, 54L), 143L, 176, 181, 182, 211, 212, 217S, one among the laboratory courses 171L (see note), 193 or a laboratory based independent study course, plus one additional courses numbered above 100 except for Physics 230. Descriptions of these courses can be found on the Duke Online Course Synopsis Web Page.

Mathematics Courses: 31, 32, 103, 107, and 108. Other choices are possible with DUS approval. For example, students with AP credits, we recommend 104, 105, 131 and 133 sequence. The choice of courses is also sometimes dictated by requirements in a second major, such as Computer Science or Mathematics. The physics department also allows physics majors to take Physics 230 for the fourth required mathematics course. Descriptions of these courses can be found on the Duke Online Course Synopsis Web Page.

Students planning graduate study in physics are urged to take at least one additional upper level physics course and one additional course in mathematics, for example, Math 135, Math 181, Math 231 or Physics 230. Students interested in attending graduate school in physics are strongly encouraged to enroll in at least one semester of Independent Study (Physics 225 or 226) sometime during the last three semesters.

For students entering before the fall of 2005

Physics Courses: 41L, 42L (or 61L, 62L or 53L, 54L), 143L, 176, 181, 182, 211, 212, and two among the laboratory courses 171L (see note), 193, 217S or a laboratory based independent study course, plus one additional courses numbered above 100 except for Physics 230. Descriptions of these courses can be found on the Duke Online Course Synopsis Web Page.

Mathematics Courses: 31, 32, 103, 111, plus one additional course above 100. Common courses to satisfy the last requirement are Math 114 or Math 135. The choice of courses is sometimes dictated by requirements in a second major, such as Computer Science (B.S. degree) or Mathematics, where Math 104 is required. Students who take Math 104 may take Math 131 in place of Math 111. The physics department also allows physics majors to take Physics 230 for the fourth required mathematics course. Descriptions of these courses can be found on the Duke Online Course Synopsis Web Page.

B.S. with Astronomy Concentration Requirements

Physics Courses: 41L, 42L (or 61L, 62L or 53L, 54L), 143L, 176, 181, 182, 211, 212, two among the courses ASTR 501, ASTR 502, or Phyics 255 and one of ASTR 519 or Independent Study (Phyics 225 or 226) with astronomy or astrophysics observational and data analysis component. ASTR 501, 502 and 519 are UNC courses. See also inter-institutional courses.

Mathematics Courses: 31, 32, 103, 107, and 108. Other choicey are possible with DUS approval. The choice of courses is sometimes dictated by requirements in a second major, such as Computer Science (B.S. degree) or Mathematics, where Math 104 is required. Students who take Math 104 may take Math 131 in place of Math 108. The physics department also allows physics majors to take Physics 230 for the fourth required mathematics course. Descriptions of these courses can be found on the Duke Online Course Synopsis Web Page.
